Dean Woods surprised with Mary Mahoney portrait

Others participating in the occasion were, from left to right, Kathleen Johnson, president, UW Nursing Alumni Association; Vivien Lee, member, MMPNO; Frances Terry, member, MMPNO; Dr. Lois Price Spratlen; Dean Nancy Woods; Gertrude Dawson, founding member, MMPNO.

Dr. Lois Price Spratlen holds a portrait of Mary Mahoney, the first known African-American professional nurse in the United States, which was presented to Dean Nancy Woods and the UW School of Nursing on behalf of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization (MMPNO). Woods had expressed an interest in the picture at a fund-raising event for the organization, erroneously believing it was part of the auction. Members then decided to surprise Woods with the picture, which now hangs in the front office of the School. They also presented Woods with a copy of the only book documenting the life of Mary Mahoney. Woods commented that the presentation provided an "opportunity to honor the diversity of our student body, faculty and staff and to acknowledge the many contributions of African-Americans to the profession of nursing."
