Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

This top-ranked Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty within the Doctor of Nursing Practice program focuses on providing primary care services in the community to clients of all ages. This specialty strongly emphasizes the broad and comprehensive preparation necessary for primary care practice. As a student, you will gain clinical experience with a multicultural mix of clients from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds in diverse settings. You will have the opportunity to build an interest area through selection of electives and clinical placements. Many valuable resources will be available to you within our school, such as:

  • faculty who are experienced, practicing nurse practitioners, many of whom are nationally known. Our faculty earn consistently high student evaluations
  • a wide range of clinical sites allows experience with diverse populations
  • opportunities to participate in research with nationally-recognized researchers
  • experiencing leadership roles in practice, organizations, research, and policy development

  • the deTornyay Center on Healthy Aging, which provides study resources as well as a limited number of competitive scholarships, and promotes research in the area of healthy aging
  • many student opportunities for those who wish to enhance their learning through healthcare immersion experiences in a society and/or culture very different from their own

Graduates of the program have assumed leadership roles in practice, education, organizations, research, and policy development. Graduates are sought after in a wide variety of clinical settings because of their wide scope of practice.

The FNP program begins Summer Quarter. GEPN students finalize the pre-RN portion of their program during Summer Quarter as well. Therefore, GEPN-D students entering FNP will spend the rest of the school year working as an RN and completing theory courses until Summer Quarter the following year.
